Kirstjen Nielsen is out as Secretary of Homeland Security, President Donald Trump announced in an April 7 tweet.
Nielsen, who served as Trump’s Homeland Security secretary since December of 2017, left her post after months of reports that Trump believed she wasn’t doing enough to successfully reduce the number of immigrants from Central America attempting to illegally enter the US.
The administration has been rocked by high-profile departures — including James Mattis as defense secretary and John Kelly as chief of staff — since Trump took office in January 2017.
