Liz Warren blames grocery store chains for high prices and gets torched online

Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts blamed grocery store chains for high grocery prices, and she faced ridicule and mockery for it online.

Critics of the Biden administration have blamed deficit spending for the recent increase in inflation, while some Democrats have tried to pass on the blame to corporations to exonerate President Joe Biden.

Warren claimed that grocery store chains were profiting at the expense of working families.

“While many Americans faced the loss of jobs, homes, and loved ones during the COVID-19 pandemic, grocery companies like yours saw immense gains through record sales and profits,” said the senator in a letter to the leadership at Kroger, Publix, and Albertson’s.

“Your company, and the other major grocers who reaped the benefits of a turbulent 2020, appear to be passing costs onto consumers to preserve your pandemic gains, and even taking advantage of inflation to add greater burdens,” she added.

Some took to social media to assail Warren for her attack on grocery stores.

“You sound like a communist demagogue. Prices rise during inflation. Inflation happens when the government prints too much money,” replied Christina Pushaw, spokesperson for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R).

“Does anyone buy this act?” responded columnist Josh Barro.

“There was a time Warren was a serious economist, right? Because she has become a complete clown now,” tweeted Pradheep Shanker of National Review.

“Imagine trying to push the idea that Big Grocery and their historic <2% profit margins are the problem,” replied Jorge Bonilla of the Media Research Center.

Last week, White House press secretary Jen Psaki faced similar online ridicule after she blamed the “greed of meat conglomerates” for the high prices of meat products at grocery stores. In a similar incident from November, liberals lashed out at CNN over their report showing that inflation had caused prices to soar at grocery stores and hurt many working families.

Polls show many Americans are blaming Biden for high inflation. The president had previously downplayed inflation but has since then admitted that pandemic payments and other spending might have contributed to the rise in prices.
