From what we’ve learned recently by the LA County Department of Public Health, Dr. Barbara Ferrer is not an M.D. She gained the title of Doctor by virtue of her Ph.D in Social Welfare. She earns more than $500,000 a year for “advancing health equity.”
In Ferrer’s defense she never said she was an M.D but there’s a disturbing amount of references on official websites, professional organizations, and health foundations naming her so. In a 2019 press release, the Network for Public Health Law even announced Dr. Ferrer as a new member of their National Advisory Board. They referred her as “Dr. Ferrer, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H, and M.Ed.”Blue Cross Blue Shield Massachusetts Foundation has named her as an MD board member as well too.
It’s unclear at this point whether or not she’s holding herself out as an M.D but this should be corrected in very important documents such as reports to a State Attorney General. Recent media attention has put her in a hotspot over her qualifications to lead the public health response to the coronavirus pandemic in Los Angeles County. She was recently interviewed on local television station KCAL and asked about her credentials and qualifications on the criticism at hand.
Ferrer noted that she doesn’t make decisions by herself. She has a team of public health practitioners, infectious disease doctors, clinical teams, you name it. She praised the vast collaboration of clinical expertise to help make all of the decisions. She referred to the rigorous training around the science and epidemiology of public health and managing outbreaks.
Ferrer then appeared on a Facebook Live Town Hall interview with Supervisor Sheila Kuehl. She was compared to Dr. Fauci who is known most for “telling truth to power.” Another Liberal spreading truth to power, eh? Oh boy.
In the Facebook Live, Ferrer seemed to repeat her prepared statement addressing her qualifications and having a supportive team behind her helping her make all of the decisions. She refers to herself as the “public face” of this because she is the director but has helped manage to create a recovery plan for the country to move forward.
Los Angeles County’s Health Officer, Dr. Muntu Davis (an actual M.D) has issued several orders differing from what Dr. Ferrer wanted. Under a state law passed in 2019 by Gavin Newsom, local health officers have broad and unchecked authority during an outbreak. They may issue orders to other governmental entities within the local health officer’s jurisdiction to take any action the local health officer deems necessary to control the spread of disease.
Dr. Ferrer praises her “team” time and time again, but what will happen when her team (with more experience, might I add) go up against her? I doubt that a Liberal making half a million dollars from taxpayers is going to be looking for anyone against her. An actual Doctor may just be out of a job.
